EDUCATION FOR LIBERATION: TEACHING AND LEARNING FROM YOUNG PEOPLE ABSTRACT
An intergenerational panel of Black journalists and journalist/activists discuss the importance of using media—especially “new media”—combined with education and social activism to create a conscious society, particularly a conscious African-American society. The panelists believe it is time to reclaim the media-based “Black public intellectual” work pioneered by Marable and others and move it forward in the 21st century. Panelists will discuss their techniques for reaching young people by using African and African-American history, print journalism, broadcasting and social media to connect with today’s youth.
Panelists include Dr. Lez Edmond, Dr. Vicky Gholson, Dr. Jared Ball, Les Payne, and Herb Boyd.
